On March 29th, Dr. Rosenthal, the head of the Section of Spine Surgery in Regional Hospital Bad Homburg and former President of German Spine Society(DWG), took part in academic exchanges and provided guidance during his visit in Mianyang Orthopedic Hospital. Deputy Party Secretary CAO Gefei attended this activity, together with Deputy Director SHUI Xiaoping and all of the spine team.

On March 29th, Dr. Rosenthal, an internationally renowned spine master, had academic exchanges and provided guidance to Mianyang Orthopedic Hospital during his visiting professorship. Dr. Rosenthal is the Head of the Section of Spine Surgery in Regional Hospital Bad Homburg and President of German Spine Society (DWG) in 2013. He is the world-class master in thoracoscopic spine surgery, he holds several patents for endoscopic instruments, and he has performed surgeries for many heads of state and government officials... At the welcoming ceremony, XIE Shiming, the president of the Mianyang Orthopedic Hospital extended his warm welcome to Dr. Rosenthal coming from afar, together with Deputy Party Secretary CAO Gefei, Deputy Director SHUI Xiaoping, Director of Dept. of Spine Surgery QING Peidong and all of the spine team. During the ceremony, President XIE said this was a precious opportunity to learn from Dr. Rosenthal and hoped that he would generously share his expertise and offer constructive suggestions and their team could actively interact with Dr. Rosenthal. He also hoped that Dr. Rosenthal could enjoy his stay in Mianyang. This was a full day with a series of activities! Accompanied by President XIE and his team, Dr. Rosenthal visited their special TCM treatment wards, experiencing the unique integration of Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. He delivered a keynote speech on OLIF technique, highlighting the advancements in the cutting-edge technologies. During a postoperative ward-round, he visited a patient with multi-level thoracic spinal stenosis, providing him some rehabilitation advice. He also engaged in three complex case discussions with young doctors, offering his own treatment plans. This exchange not only broadened international horizons but also built up a bridge for Sino-German cooperation on medicine. Both parties are committed to deepening cooperation and jointly advancing the treatment levels of spinal surgery, enabling more patients to benefit from world-class medical technologies.

Led by the hospital executives of Mianyang Orthopedic Hospital, Dr. Rosenthal visited the hospital campus in the southern part of Mianyang city on the spot. He went to the outpatient clinics and distinctive TCM treatment wards, having an understanding on the specialties distribution of the hospital, TCM preparation and distinctive therapy in the hospital. 

On the forum, President XIE Shiming and Deputy Party Secretary CAO Gefei delivered a welcome speech respectively, briefly introducing the hospital. Director of Dept. of Spine Surgery QING Peidong gave a brief introduction in history of the Department development, discipline construction and academic exchanges, and shared latest typical surgical cases. 

Dr. Rosenthal gave a lecture about OLIF technique, and introduced the latest international research progress in spine surgery and had heated discussions with the spine team to address some questions, like the diagnosis and treatment of spinal degenerative diseases and the possible surgical treatment for osteoporosis patients.

Accompanied by director QING Peidong, Dr. Rosenthal visited the ward and checked for an inpatient patient who performed a surgery for multi-level thoracic stenosis, and shared experiences with the team in perioperative management, post-operative rehabilitation programs and the clinical outcomes. ?

Doctor LIU Hongjun, LI Mingfan and GOU Yuankun shared three complex cases, which were Cervical OPLL Case Sharing, Treatment Process of a Patient with Severe Spine Deformity and Treatment Process for Rheumatoid Arthritis Complicated by Thoracolumbar Fractures respectively. Later, Dr. Rosenthal provided suggestions to optimize the surgical solutions, enlightening new thoughts among the whole spine team through discussions.

The visit of Dr. Rosenthal not only improved the team’s capability in diagnosis and treatment, and clinical research, but also built a bridge to exchange and cooperate with top-notch medical institutes. Mianyang Orthopedic Hospital will further strengthen international cooperation and exchanges, and advance international diagnosis so as to provide medical service with better quality for patients.
