On April 6th, the Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Salzburg University Hospital of the Paracelsus Medical University (PMU), the President of the Austrian Society for Surgery in 2025, Prof. Freude landed in Shanghai from Munich. It was a rainy early morning, and I together with Véronique picked up Prof. Freude at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. In the morning, we showed Prof. Freude around the Yu Garden in Shanghai. We walked around this tranquil and delicate Classical Chinese gardens, which was founded in 1557 with an area of 30 acres with English introduction of the garden provided to the professor. For dinner, we enjoyed Shanghai cuisine at the Shanghai Classical Hotel founded in 1875. During dinner, Prof. Freude told us that 6 million people died from COVID-19 globally in the last few years. More strikingly, 40 million people die from trauma injuries or related cases annually around the world. Therefore, it is vital to develop trauma centers in the leading Grade Three Class A hospitals. Trauma Surgery should earn attention as a first-level specialty, as much as Orthopedics does. However, at present, all the hospitals in China list Trauma Surgery as a sub-specialty, which is an absolutely wrong classification. Over the past decades, in Germany, on average there is a trauma center every 50 kilometers, enabling the healthcare system to provide prompt aid for trauma patients. If the trauma injuries are beyond the capacity of the local facilities, the patient will be transferred rapidly by helicopter to the national trauma center for treatment. In Germany, Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery go into one association named German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU), while in China it is called the Chinese Orthopaedic Association, COA for short. And Trauma Surgery is a mere branch of COA. For so many years, presidents of COA should have prioritized specialty development and talent cultivation, So that it could make practical contributions to China’s healthcare system, rather than act so condescending and detached.
